Experimental evidence that leaf litter decomposability and flammability are decoupled across gymnosperm species

چکیده
Abstract Biological decomposition and wildfire are two predominant alternative processes that can mineralize organic C in forest litter. Currently, the relationships between fire still poorly understood. We provide an empirical test of hypothesized decoupling surface litter bed decomposability flammability, underlying traits trait spectra. employed a 41‐species set gymnosperms very broad evolutionary geographic spread, because wide range (absent to frequent) regimes they associated with. found interspecific pattern mass loss proportions “common garden” experiment was not correlated with any flammability parameters RDA analysis also showed leaf layers were decoupled across species. This originates from former depending mostly on size shape spectrum latter PES those spectra being virtually uncorrelated. Synthesis : Our results show that, indeed, species, this be explained by their different drivers terms spectra: chemical for size‐shape layer flammability.

متن کاملExperimental evidence that the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model best describes the evolution of leaf litter decomposability
Leaf litter decomposability is an important effect trait for ecosystem functioning. However, it is unknown how this effect trait evolved through plant history as a leaf 'afterlife' integrator of the evolution of multiple underlying traits upon which adaptive selection must have acted. Did decomposability evolve in a Brownian fashion without any constraints? Was evolution rapid at first and then...

متن کاملLeaf traits capture the effects of land use changes and climate on litter decomposability of grasslands across Europe.
Land use and climate changes induce shifts in plant functional diversity and community structure, thereby modifying ecosystem processes. This is particularly true for litter decomposition, an essential process in the biogeochemical cycles of carbon and nutrients. In this study, we asked whether changes in functional traits of living leaves in response to changes in land use and climate were rel...
متن کاملDifferences in Leaf Flammability, Leaf Traits and Flammability-Trait Relationships between Native and Exotic Plant Species of Dry Sclerophyll Forest
The flammability of plant leaves influences the spread of fire through vegetation. Exotic plants invading native vegetation may increase the spread of bushfires if their leaves are more flammable than native leaves. We compared fresh-leaf and dry-leaf flammability (time to ignition) between 52 native and 27 exotic plant species inhabiting dry sclerophyll forest. We found that mean time to ignit...
